The Deities of Maharashtra

  • Maharashtra state is an integral part of India and as such, believes in and prays to the same deities as in rest of India. As with every region of India, there are deities that are more popular in Maharashtra in a particular form and people from this state have a special affinity for them.
  • Among the most beloved deities of Maharashtra is the Vitthal-Rukmini of Pandharpur in southern Maharashtra. Vitthal is considered to be avatar of Lord Vishnu and tales of this deity and their disciples are an essential part of the fabric of Maharashtra.
  • Almost all the saints in the Sant Parampara (Tradition of Saints) are devotees of Lord Vitthala and Mother Rukmini. The poetry of these saints, called the Abhangs and Ovis, are literally the mainstay of devotees in this state.
  • Over time, we will be consecrating other deities from the State such as Devi Ambabai and Shri Dattatrey as well as of some of the beloved saints and seers.
